This whole Harriet Miers business has me divided. On one hand, this ridiculous nomination of a clearly unqualified candidate only serves to expose the incompetence and corruption of the current administration. Of course, there has been far more of this sort of evidence than a country should ever have to endure, but it's an unfortunate fact that most American people can't be bothered to pick up a fucking newspaper and realize the awful price our country is currently paying for its ignorance. However, the last thing we should have in this country is yet another Bush crony running things the way Bush wants them to be run.
On the other hand, even right wing nutjobs like Michelle Malkin and Pat Buchanan are chiming in and denouncing the president for his flawed choice for Supreme Court justice. They claim that Bush has summarily failed the Republican agenda by nominating a candidate that isn't conservative enough for the tastes of their party. If Miers is confirmed (which is highly unlikely, given the bad press she has received so far), their dreams of a Supreme Court that has been reshaped in their image will be lost for another generation.
Does David Souter ring any bells? You bet it does for most conservatives. Nominated by the other Bush administration, Souter was a hopeful to be a strong Republican ally in the Court, but turned out to be a huge bust when, later in his career, Souter's political stances veered somewhat towards the left. There are fears that Miers, if confirmed, may turn out the same way.
Would that really be so bad, though? So Miers could either turn out to be a completely ineffectual justice, or she could turn out to be yet another David Souter. Would that really be so much worse than anything that Pat Buchanan wants for America?

But that was 4 days ago. I waited and am now ready to execute my summary judgement: let's filibuster her. Though I always hesitate when I see myself agreeing with the likes of Ann Coulter, I think we may have found an unlikely ally in the extreme right fringe. While we agree for completely different reasons, I'm ready to make a pact with the devil in this case.
In a sense, this is their fault. It's not enough for them to just win, they have to run a victory lap, dance in the endzone or perform whatever sports related bragging you most identify with. They got too greedy and because Miers is merely a light-weight conservative instead of a staunch conservative, they're still not happy and that dissatisfaction will sink them.
I, however, am an elitist. The Supreme Court deserves only the finest minds on its bench. I tend to disagree with Roberts and Scalia in thier conclusions, but only because I start with the a different set premises: they truly are first-class intellectuals. Miers' greatest accomplishment, though, is calling Dubya "the most brilliant man" she's ever met.
I cannot abide the fact that incompetents are being put in positions of lasting power just because of their loyalty to Bush. We got rid of the spoils system decades ago, and I say we fight its re-emergence tooth and nail. We can't go on record saying that cronyism is okay in a supposedly meritocratic democracy, despite what that traitorous "Democratic" Leader Harry Reid says.
